Twenty odd years ago we were never sure what colour our local river was going to be on any given day, however, you certainly knew when it wasn’t running clear as there was an awful stench in the air, today this river is fished and is a pleasant place to walk.
Some people may have become cynical about environmentally friendly issues and organisations mainly due to politicians looking to benefit from showing an allegiance to such worthy causes, however, when you strip away any possible political advantage of promoting a more environmentally aware society we ask a simple question “do you wish to live in a cleaner, greener(and less smelly) world?” If the answer is yes then why not keep up the good work that has taken place over the previous couple of decades. At the end of the day a small print shop like ours isn’t going to destroy the earth on it’s own, however, we can play our part in helping prevent such a catastrophe, so if we all do our own little bit and enough of us do those little bits then they will add up to one big bit.
It’s our policy here at Unita Design to reduce the amount the earths depleting resources such as the raw materials we use and the energy required for our processes, we print on an ARAB treadle (foot powered) platen press.
We reuse what ever we can from packaging mailed to us to, buying/accepting used machinery for our design and production operations , we are the fourth generation that we know of to be lucky enough to be the guardians of our beloved ARAB and hopefully it will last for a long time yet.
We don’t bin things as a rule before asking ourselves if it could be of use to someone else first, and reuse waste paper around the office before eventually recycling it.
And whenever we do create waste we recycle it avoiding any landfill wherever possible. In the case of our choice of materials we don’t only look at the environmental credentials of the product but also ask ourselves if it could be made into something else. Although we all talk about the benefits of recycling, more often than not we are actually down-cycling a high grade product to a low grade product, which is good in itself, however, some products like Cranes Lettra Cotton 100% tree free paper used in our range of letterpress wedding stationary is not only an
environmentally responsible source but the high qualities of the fibres it’s made up of will actually enhance the quality of the post-consumer waste paper it is put into.
There’s nothing new here we simply see it as our responsibility to leave as light an impression as we can, which in turn helps us keep an eye not only on the end of the financial year but also on future generations to come.
We don’t claim to be the finished article but do promise to learn more, listen to people and work towards continual improvement.
